12 Sep 2010: Forest walk with the 28-300mm. Much easier to carry than 2 bodies and two primes!

09 Sep 2010: A quick test of the new Nikon 28-300mm VR. This was taken at 180mm, so I must return with my 180mm f/2.8 to compare. The image is sharp, bokeh on other shots is quite acceptable and I like the way this lens treats the subject. The feel is similar to the Nikon 18-70mm, just a bit bigger but reasonably solid and inspires confidence. One does compromise on image quality with a super-zoom, but the benefits for a motorcyclist are huge.

07 September 2010: The draft version of Taming the Dragon is done! Dissertations are a problem for most Undergraduate and Masters students. Tutors have limited time to cover a lot of knowledge, supervisors don't have the time to individually tutor, and students are expected to learn for themselves. Unfortunately research textbooks tend to be concept-centric rather than process-centric, requiring the student to know a lot before they begin, and the dissertation is far-too frequently the first time that students are expected to write critically and understand formal logic. This book attempts to resolve that, and to give me something to do when I submitted the final version of my PhD at the end of July 2010.

22 Aug 2010: A sunny day at Scarhouse Reservoir, although the wind was blowing up white horses on the water.

20 Aug 2010: An outdoor concert on the grounds of Clumber Park, with ABC, Go West, Rick Astley and T'pau. The rain came and went, brollies went up and down, but it was a pretty good concert. The acts have had 20+ years to practice after all!

04 July 2010: Old ducks having lunch at Fewston Reservoir. Old age doesn't have to mean sitting in a care home and playing Scrabble.
